For the contestants: Hi, everyone! I'd like some advice on editing and camera settings. Also the quality of the image. Maybe you could tell me something about how you would have positioned yourself in this case? Is the light from the sunset bright enough? Is the swan positioned correct in the frame? Is there too much water or should there be more? Is the deviation good as a square or should it be rectangular?! I have so many questions and things I would like to hear your opinion about!
Hello! I'm Travis and I'm gonna give you some feedback on this piece.
I really like the position of the swan, and how soft the waters look. You did a great job capturing the sunset in the background.
I really like the angle! Just a way you can make it better would be to bend down a little bit, and tilt the camera up some. That way the swan would be in the same place, but we could also get a tiny peek at that beautiful sun. Also turning the camera just a tad bit to the left could also work. That would set the swan to the right a little more, (in my opinion) making it just that much more super.
As for camera settings, maybe giving it a little bit more exposure to make the sun in the water a little more sharp. If you didn't with this photo, try putting it on the infinite setting, that way the whole thing is in good focus.
I think it looks good as a square though. Doesn't show too much and doesn't show to little of ether direction.
Overall, this is a very nice and sincere photo! Keep up the good work!
Hello, I'm here to write a critique as part of contest!
I like how you captured the grace of the swan. Also, the colours of the water and sunset light combined together are just wonderful. The waves, the reflections, the subjects position are working well together. Also, the subject it's not central, so doesn't make the picture dull.
However, I do find the picture a bit simple. Maybe a bit more focus on the main subject would have made it better. Or taking the picture from a different angle (including part of the sky?), or a closer look at the swan.
Keep up the good work, and have a Merry Christmas!
You've done a lovely job at capturing the swan. It's such an elegant bird and it looks so peaceful on that water just gently swimming along.
I like that you've places the bird at the bottom and at a diagonal to the sun's reflection as it gives the picture something else to look at and makes it more interesting. The first things that I look at when viewing this picture is the swan, and the orange reflection of the sun simply because those are the points of interest within the picture. I wouldn't want the swan to be anywhere else in the picture, because I feel it is well balanced as is and to have it anywhere else would most likely spoil that effect and compete with the sun.
You asked whether the work should be square or rectangle. As a square the photo works, but I would like to see it as a rectangle either horizontal or vertical as I'm sure it would give a different feel to it that wouldn't harm the picture.

And lastly, I love the way the sun shows off the ripples of the water to their best effect, it really adds a lot more interest to the picture then if the shading and highlights the sun adds to it wasn't there
I really like how the water is nice and soft and rippled The sun looks nice on the water, but the picture overall a bit plain. Maybe if you had crouched lower with your camera, the swan would be silhouetted against the light? That would have been an AWESOME picture
I like the gradient of light in the water, and creates a good balance with the position of the swan in the evening light. The only recommendation I can give is that approach the reflex of the swan. keep exploring and working!!
Hi, I'm :devhild-of-minerva: from #FeedbackFrenzy. Here's what I think of your photo:
I like the idea. You have great intentions with this photo. I like the rippled glass effect of the water and how you tried to make the swan the focus.
However, while white and blue do contrast, warm vs. cold colors is a greater contrast. So my eyes automatically drag to the sunset lit waters. I think you could post edit it with either the sunlit water darker or dark water lighter. Also play around with it trying to make the swan contrast more. Or you could try a different angle with the sun as a background when you take a similar picture.
Hope this helps and good luck shooting in the future!
Thank you very much, and you're absolutely right about the need for another angle. This picture was taken from a boat, so it was hard to get to water level without dropping in. :S
